Chapter 9 - The Siege

A heavy gloved hand reached through the broken window, unlocking the door from the inside. Dr. Vance was dragged violently out into the torrential rain, screaming as he was thrown to the asphalt.
I screamed, shielding the baby with my body as the car door was yanked open.
Standing in the rain was James.
His face was bruised and bloody, his shirt torn, but his eyes were cold, calculating, and completely stripped of the loving warmth I had known for eleven years.
“Hand her over, Eleanor,” James said softly, his voice devoid of emotion.
“You lied to me!” I roared, pressing back against the passenger seat. “You sold my egg to Marcus Vance! You built our family on a filthy, disgusting transaction!”
“I did what I had to do to save my own life!” James shouted over the thunder. “I was twenty-five! I owed dangerous people millions! Marcus offered to wipe my debt clean if I gave him access to your genetic lineage! I didn't know you’d become the love of my life, Eleanor! I didn't know we’d have three boys together!”
“And what about our daughter?” I wept. “She’s just a bargaining chip to you?”
“She’s fifty million dollars!” James yelled, stepping into the car frame and reaching for the child. “With that money, we can buy a private island! We can take our boys and live like royalty! Marcus doesn't want the baby to raise her—he just wants her bone marrow! They take a few medical samples, and we get the cash! Nobody dies!”

“You’re a monster,” I whispered, horror choking my throat.
I didn't hesitate. I pulled the fire extinguisher Dr. Vance had left on the floorboards and slammed it directly into James’s knee.
