Chapter 5 - The Medical Conspiracy

Before Marcus could take another step, the emergency alarm in the hallway shrieked. Red strobe lights began flashing, painting the room in a bloody hue.

The door to the adjoining bathroom burst open, and a woman in a nurse’s scrub uniform charged out, holding a fire extinguisher. She slammed the heavy metal cylinder directly into the side of the guard’s head, knocking him unconscious.

It was Sarah.

Her face bore subtle surgical scars along her jawline, but those were undeniably my sister’s fierce, protective eyes.

“Run, Eleanor!” Sarah screamed, spraying the chemical foam directly into Marcus Vance’s face.

Marcus reeled backward, cursing blinded as the harsh white powder filled his eyes and mouth. James scrambled off the floor, tackled the second guard into the wall, and yelled, “Go! Get to the parking garage! Key in the red sedan!”

I didn't hesitate. I bolted past the struggling men, clutching the baby against my chest, and ran down the chaotic corridor. Nurses and patients were scrambling in confusion as the fire alarms blared.

I hit the stairwell, taking the steps three at a time, my heart threatening to burst from my chest. When I smashed through the heavy push-bar doors into the dim parking garage, a dark SUV peeled around the corner, its headlights blinding me.

The passenger door threw itself open.

“Get in!” a voice barked.

I stopped dead in my tracks. Sitting in the driver’s seat was Dr. Vance—Marcus’s estranged brother, and the very doctor who had told me ten years ago that I could never bear another child.
