Chapter 17 - The Laboratory of Ghosts

Victoria slowly turned, an arrogant smile gracing her red lips as she took in the sight of me holding a gun in one hand and my baby strapped to my chest.
"How brave," Victoria mocked, gesturing for her men to hold their fire. "The desperate mother comes to play hero. Do you really think you can aim that weapon before my men turn you into threadbare ribbons?"
"I don't need to aim at your men," I said, pointing the barrel directly at a massive, pressurized liquid nitrogen tank situated above their central computer setup. "That tank feeds the high-density cooling system for your bio-tech servers. One bullet breaches the valve, and this entire warehouse freezes in sub-zero gas within ten seconds."
Victoria’s smile faltered. Her eyes flicked upward toward the frosty valves of the industrial chemical tanks.
"You're bluffing," Victoria snapped. "You wouldn't risk your daughter's life."
"Try me," I said, stepping closer. "My sister died once to protect me. I survived three high-risk surgeries to raise my boys. You think a monster like you scares me? You're nothing but a parasite living off the blood of stolen children!"

"Kill her!" Victoria suddenly shrieked to her guards.
Before the mercenaries could raise their rifles, a deafening blast echoed through the roof skylights. Flashbang grenades tumbled down, exploding in a blinding flurry of white light and thunderous booms.
