Chapter 4 - Confrontation at the Cradle

“Get away from her!” I screamed, backing toward the window, holding the baby as tightly as I dared without hurting her.
“You’re confused, Mrs. Grayson,” Marcus said smoothly, taking a pair of leather gloves from his pocket. “Your husband has spun you quite a fairytale, hasn't he? But the truth is far simpler. Your sister Sarah owed me a massive debt. She thought she could hide in the dark, steal my biological research, and use your frozen egg as a cover to produce a child with unique genetic immunity.”
My heart hammered against my ribs. “Genetic immunity?”
“Your family carries a rare blood mutation,” Marcus explained, taking a slow step forward. “One that makes you immune to a degenerative neurological disease that is currently destroying my body. Sarah didn't just carry a baby to give you a daughter, Eleanor. She bred a cure. That infant’s cord blood is worth tens of millions on the black market.”
I looked down at the tiny girl in my arms. Her soft pink lips parted in her sleep, completely oblivious to the monster standing three feet away. She wasn't just a child; she was a golden ticket in a twisted game of human science.
“She’s not an asset,” James growled, lunging at Marcus.
One of the armed guards stepped in, driving a heavy fist into James’s stomach. James collapsed to his knees, gasping for air.

“James!” I cried out.
Marcus paid him no mind. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a syringe filled with clear fluid. “Hand over the baby, Eleanor. Or your husband doesn't leave this room alive.”
