Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Threshold

“Eleanor, get in the car right now if you want to live!” Dr. Vance yelled over the revving engine. “Marcus’s men are everywhere!”

“You lied to me!” I screamed back, stepping behind a concrete pillar. “You told me I could never have a baby! You helped him!”

“I lied to save your life!” Dr. Vance shouted, his hands shaking on the steering wheel. “Marcus was watching your medical records! If he knew your ovaries were still viable, he would have harvested you years ago! I altered your charts to make him think you were sterile so he’d leave you alone!”

Screeching tires echoed from the floor above. Another vehicle was descending into the garage.

I had seconds to decide. Trust the doctor who had spent a decade deceiving me, or get caught in the open by Marcus’s mercenaries.

I dove into the passenger seat, slammed the door, and pulled the seatbelt over myself and the baby. Dr. Vance slammed his foot on the accelerator, sending the car roaring toward the exit gate just as two dark sedans blocked the upper ramp.

We crashed through the wooden security barrier, sparks flying into the night air, and sped out onto the rain-slicked highway.

In the backseat, my phone vibrated violently. I snatched it out of my pocket. It was a text message from an unknown number:

“They have James. If you want him alive, bring the child to the old harbor warehouse at midnight. Do not call the police.”
