Chapter 25 - The Ultimate Truth

One month later.
The sunshine fell brightly over our family’s new farm estate in rural Vermont. The air smelled of freshly cut grass, pine needles, and peace.
The Vance empire was completely erased. The global federal investigation had seized every asset, destroyed every illegal lab, and granted our family full, unyielding witness protection immunity under completely new identities.
Sarah sat on the porch step, drinking coffee, watching my three older boys—now ten, eight, and five—kick a soccer ball across the vast green lawn. In the shade of the grand oak tree, a double stroller held twins Hope and Leo, both fast asleep, their tiny fingers intertwined.
For the first time in my life, I felt like I could breathe without waiting for the floor to collapse beneath my feet.
A mail truck pulled up to the gate, leaving a thick brown envelope in the box before driving away. I walked down the driveway to retrieve it. It was from the Chief Medical Examiner of the Federal Protection Bureau—a routine post-investigation genetic clearance report certifying that all remaining biological records of our family had been permanently scrubbed from global databases.
I sat on the swing beside Sarah, opening the report to file it away.
Attached to the back of the official clearance documents was a sealed yellow envelope marked: Personal DNA Sequencing Archives - Project Grayson.
Out of curious habit, I opened it, turning to the final page to look at the family tree chart.
My heart suddenly stopped. My blood ran completely cold.
I stared at the black-and-white genetic lineage grid for my three older boys—the sons I had carried in my own body, the boys I thought were my natural, innocent children born long before this nightmare ever began.
Under each of their names—nine-year-old Luke, seven-year-old Mason, and four-year-old Toby—was a bold red biological stamp:
Subject 01 (Luke): Embryonic Clone - Model A Subject 02 (Mason): Embryonic Clone - Model B Subject 03 (Toby): Embryonic Clone - Model C Genetic Source: Primary Male DNA (Marcus Vance) / Primary Female DNA (Eleanor Grayson)
The paper slipped from my numb fingers, floating softly to the wooden porch floor.
James hadn't just betrayed me twelve years ago. My entire life—every pregnancy, every child I had ever brought into this world, every single boy playing on that lawn—was part of Evelyn’s grand design from the very beginning. All five of my children were part of the same genetic legacy.
I stood up slowly, watching my three boys run toward the double stroller, laughing, shouting, and gently adjusting the blankets over their baby twin brother and sister to keep the shade off their faces.
They looked up at me, their bright, innocent eyes shining in the warm sun.
"Mom!" Luke called out, waving his hands. "Look! Leo smiled at me!"
I closed my eyes for a long moment, taking a deep, shuddering breath. Then, I stepped off the porch and walked onto the grass, pulling all five of my children into my arms.
The monsters had designed them in a lab. They had built them to be weapons, currency, and scientific property. But as I held them tight under the open sky, feeling their warm laughter against my skin, I knew the ultimate truth:
May you like
They belonged to no empire. They belonged to no legacy.
They were mine. And I would burn the world to ashes before I ever let anyone touch them again.
