Chapter 8 - The Trial of Blood and Fire

“What is this?” I breathed, staring at the screen in utter horror. “This... this says the father is Marcus Vance!”

Dr. Vance pulled the car over completely, staring at the monitor with wide, terrified eyes. “No... no, that’s impossible. James gave his sperm sample for the extraction twelve years ago.”

“Unless it was swapped,” I whispered, a horrifying realization washing over me.

Everything began to lock into place with sickening clarity. James’s refusal to throw away the box of baby clothes. His quiet trips out of town. The mysterious phone calls late at night.

James hadn't just been protecting my sister. James had been working for Marcus Vance a decade ago before he met me. He wasn't the innocent victim in this story—he was the architect. He had allowed Marcus’s genetic material to fertilize my egg as part of a desperate bargain to pay off his own crippling gambling debts before we got married!

“He traded my egg to a monster to clear his own name,” I sobbed, tears blurring my vision. “He built our entire marriage on a biological crime!”

“Eleanor, listen to me,” Dr. Vance said, grasping my arm firmly. “If Marcus is the father, he has absolute legal leverage under the black-market contract Sarah signed. But there is a loophole.”

“What loophole?”

“Marcus signed a parental rights transfer twelve hours ago, thinking he was selling the child to an overseas buyer,” Vance explained rapidly. “He doesn't know Sarah swapped the destination codes. Legally, under federal biological laws, if you register the baby’s birth certificate right now using the digital portal on this drive, you become her sole legal guardian, completely overriding biological paternal claims from a convicted felon!”

Before I could press 'Submit' on the dashboard screen, the driver-side window shattered into a million sharp fragments.
