Chapter 10 - The Imposter & The Final Reckoning

Evelyn’s blood ran dead cold. "What are you talking about?!"
"My son Julian was murdered five years ago in an illegal gambling den in Macao!" Beatrice hissed into the phone. "The man calling himself Julian... he had his face reconstructed! He stole my son’s identity, his voice, his entire life! He is Marcus Montgomery—your father’s illegitimate son!"
The phone slipped from Evelyn’s trembling fingers and hit the carpet.
Marcus. Her father’s secret son from an affair twenty-five years ago—a child her father had disowned and cast aside. Marcus didn't just want money; he wanted complete, total destruction of both the Vance and Montgomery bloodlines as revenge for his abandoned childhood.
Before Evelyn could react, the heavy mahogany door of her bedroom burst open.
Marcus stood on the threshold, a dark smile playing on his lips. He was holding a silver tray with a glass of warm milk.
"Who were you talking to, sister?" Marcus asked, his tone dripping with fake warmth.
Evelyn slowly turned around, backing up toward the crib. "You're not Julian. You're Marcus."
Marcus’s smile vanished instantly. His eyes turned black with pure, unadulterated hatred. He set the tray down and took a slow step toward her.
"Ah," Marcus murmured softly. "Old mother Beatrice finally spoke, did she? It doesn't matter. It’s too late, Evelyn. Tomorrow morning, the global board of directors will approve the merge of Montgomery Shipping into my offshore holdings. You and your little bastard will be officially declared mentally unfit, and I will be named sole guardian of the estate."
"I will never let you near my son!" Evelyn screamed, grabbing a heavy brass statuette from the nightstand.
Marcus lunged at her. Evelyn swung with all her strength, striking him across the jaw. Marcus stumbled back, blood spilling from his lip, but he quickly recovered, grabbing her wrists and pinning her against the wall.
"You are just like your father!" Marcus growled, his fingers tightening around her neck. "Arrogant, selfish, and weak!"
BANG!
A deafening gunshot echoed through the bedroom.
Marcus froze. He slowly looked down at his chest, where a dark crimson stain was rapidly expanding across his white shirt. He stumbled backward and fell hard onto the polished wood floor.
Standing in the doorway, bleeding from her foot, was Martha.
She was holding a smoking revolver, her arms shaking, but her eyes burning with fierce protection.
"I promised your mother..." Martha gasped, tears streaming down her bruised face, "...that no one would ever hurt you again."
Martha hadn't been in a coma. She had escaped Julian’s facility days ago, tracking Marcus to Switzerland with the help of the Swiss federal police, who now swarmed into the hallway behind her, weapons raised.
"Clear! Drop the weapon!" the Interpol officers shouted, securing the room and applying pressure to Marcus’s wound.
Evelyn collapsed to her knees, breaking down into heavy, racking sobs as Martha rushed over, pulling Evelyn and the crying baby into a tight, protective embrace.
EPILOGUE: A NEW DAWNOne Year Later.
The sun shone brightly over the grand courtyard of the Montgomery Empire Headquarters in New York City.
Hundreds of reporters and news crews crowded around the main steps as Evelyn Montgomery stepped up to the podium, wearing an elegant cream-colored suit. She looked confident, powerful, and completely unbroken. Beside her sat Martha, now retired and smiling peacefully as she held Evelyn’s one-year-old son, Leo.
"Today," Evelyn announced calmly into the microphones, "Montgomery Shipping officially launches the Montgomery-Martha Foundation, dedicated to protecting victims of domestic abuse and corporate fraud worldwide. The Vance family assets have been completely liquidated, and the truth has finally been brought to light."
The crowd erupted in applause. Cameras flashed continuously. Evelyn smiled, feeling a sense of true freedom for the first time in her life.
She walked down the steps, holding her son in her arms, ready to start a peaceful life away from the bloodlines of greed and deceit.
As her driver opened the door of her limousine, a young courier approached and handed her a unmarked black envelope.
"For you, Ms. Montgomery. It was delivered to the front desk this morning."
Evelyn opened the envelope. Inside was a single, handwritten note written in familiar, frantic handwriting:
"The prison transport van crashed in upstate New York two hours ago. I am free, Evelyn. And I'm coming back for my son.
— Daniel"

Evelyn stared at the letter, her smile fading into a cold, sharp blade. She crumpled the paper in her fist, looked up at the sky, and whispered:
"Let him come."
