Chapter 2 - The Hospital of Lies

Evelyn woke up to the sterile, suffocating smell of bleach and antiseptic.
Her head throbbed violently, and her body felt like it had been crushed under a hydraulic press. Panic seized her throat. Her hand immediately darted down to her stomach. The bump was still there. She felt a faint, rhythmic kick. The baby was alive.
"You shouldn't be moving, Mrs. Vance," a cold, unfamiliar voice spoke from the shadows of the room.
Evelyn turned her head sharply. Sitting in an armchair in the corner was a tall man in a tailored dark suit. It wasn't Daniel. It was Julian Vance—Daniel’s estranged older brother, the dark sheep of the powerful Vance family, who had vanished five years ago after a bitter war over the family inheritance.
"Julian?" Evelyn’s voice was barely a whisper. "Where... where is Daniel? Where is his mother?"
Julian chuckled bitterly, swirling a glass of amber liquid. "They're downstairs in the main lobby, holding a press conference. Daniel is weeping in front of twenty news crews, explaining how his tragic, mentally unstable wife suffered a psychotic episode and jumped off the roof... taking poor old Martha down with her."
Evelyn’s blood ran cold. "That’s a lie! He cut the rope! Beatrice pushed me!"
"Of course they did," Julian said, his eyes narrowing. "Do you really think Daniel married you for love, Evelyn? You were the sole heiress to the Montgomery shipping empire. But six months ago, your father died, leaving everything in a trust fund that activates only upon the birth of a male heir. If you die without a child, the Montgomery fortune reverts to the Vance family through your marriage contract."
Evelyn’s jaw dropped. "No... he loved me..."
May you like
"He loved your money," Julian snapped. "And right now, the doctors here are under Daniel’s payroll. They are preparing to give you an 'emergency injection' to clear your heavy internal bleeding. Except... it’s not medicine, Evelyn. It’s a high dose of potassium chloride. It will stop your heart, and they will claim you died from complications of the fall."
Before Evelyn could process the terror, the door handle rattled.
