Chapter 4 - The Secret Mansion

Julian smuggled Evelyn out of the hospital through the underground morgue, loading her into a blacked-out SUV.
They drove for two hours into the foggy coastal hills outside the city, arriving at a secluded estate guarded by armed men. Evelyn was taken to a luxurious bedroom, where a private medical team was already waiting.
For three weeks, Evelyn was kept in complete isolation. Her body healed, and her baby remained healthy, but she was a prisoner in a golden cage. She learned from the news broadcasts on TV that Daniel had reported her "kidnapped" by unknown assailants, blaming the incident on her late father's business rivals. Beatrice was publicly mourning, playing the grieving mother-in-law to perfection.
One evening, Julian walked into her room carrying a thick leather binder.
"Why are you keeping me here, Julian?" Evelyn demanded, standing up straight. "If you hate Daniel, let me go to the police! I can testify against him!"
"The police?" Julian laughed softly. "The Chief of Police is Beatrice’s cousin, Evelyn. The judge who signed your father's estate trust is on Daniel’s payroll. The legal system won't save you. They will declare you insane, lock you in an asylum, and take your child."
Julian opened the binder on the table, revealing financial records, wire transfers, and autopsy reports.
"Look closely," Julian said. "Your father didn't die of a heart attack six months ago. He was poisoned over three years with trace amounts of thallium. And do you know who purchased that poison?"

Evelyn stared at the document. The signatures on the chemical purchases weren't Daniel's. Nor were they Beatrice's.
The signature belonged to Martha—the old maid who had just risked her life to save Evelyn.
