Chapter 9 - The Golden Cage Cracks

The cold mountain breeze of the Swiss Alps swept across the marble terrace, but Evelyn felt frozen from the inside out.
She stared at the DNA paper resting on the glass table. 99.9% match. Julian Vance, the dark sheep who had disappeared five years ago, wasn't just her savior—he was the father of her child, and the mastermind who had orchestrated the downfall of his own brother and mother.
"Why?" Evelyn’s voice trembled, her hands tightening around her baby boy. "Why did you let Daniel marry me? Why did you let me suffer for two years in that horrific marriage?"
Julian took a slow, methodical sip of his orange juice, his expression unreadable.
"Because Daniel was necessary, my dear," Julian replied, leaning forward, his voice a soft, dangerous whisper. "If I had married you directly five years ago, your father would have investigated my background and blocked the trust fund. But Daniel? Daniel was weak, greedy, and easily manipulated. I fed him the idea that you were cheating on him. I pushed Beatrice’s paranoia to the edge. I gave them the rope, Evelyn... they simply chose to hang themselves with it."
A chill ran down Evelyn’s spine. Julian hadn't just saved her from the roof—he had calculated every single move, including the moment she would fall, ensuring he would be there to scoop up the entire Montgomery shipping fortune under his name.
"You're a monster," Evelyn breathed.
"I am a businessman," Julian corrected smoothly. "And you, Evelyn, are now my legally bound partner. You won't leave this villa. You have everything money can buy, but if you try to contact the outside world, the truth about your father's death will be rewritten to paint you as the killer."
That night, locked in her high-security suite, Evelyn refused to be a helpless victim again. She waited until the guards rotated shifts at midnight. Using a micro-satellite phone hidden inside her baby’s stuffed animal—a gift Martha had given her weeks ago before being transferred—Evelyn dialed an untraceable number.
She wasn't calling the police. She was calling the maximum-security federal penitentiary in New York.
"Connect me to inmate Beatrice Vance," Evelyn demanded into the receiver.
Three minutes later, a raspy, broken voice came through the static. "Evelyn...? Why are you calling me from beyond the grave?"
"I know Julian is behind everything, Beatrice," Evelyn said coldly. "He forced your hand. He framed you and Daniel."
May you like
A harsh, hysterical laugh echoed from the receiver.
"You stupid girl," Beatrice wheezed into the phone. "You think Julian is playing you? Julian died five years ago in Singapore! The man standing in front of you isn't Julian Vance!"
