Chapter 1 - The Mezzanine ViewThe amber light of the Fairmont ballroom caught the subtle glimmer of the diamonds against Madison's neck—my diamonds. From my vantage point on the mezzanine, looking down through the polished brass railing, I could see the exact way Ethan placed his hand at the small of her back. It was the same possessive, practiced grip he used to use on me during our early years, before the long hours, the late-night "investor calls," and the quiet erosion of our marriage.

"Mrs. Cole," the investor had said.

And Madison had just smiled.

She didn't stammer. She didn't look around nervously to see if I was lurking in a corner. She adjusted the neckline of my midnight-blue silk dress—the one that still smelled faintly of the Parisian dry cleaner we used after our anniversary trip—and accepted the praise as if it were her birthright.

My phone vibrated sharply against my palm.

I glanced down at the screen. A text message from an unknown number: “Some people know how to play the game, Oanh. You just wanted to sit on the sidelines.”

Attached was a photo taken ten minutes earlier: Ethan smiling broadly beside Madison as she held a glass of Dom Pérignon, both of them framed against the grand backdrop of the Meridian Analytics banner.

I didn't panic. My heart rate didn't even spike.

Because six hours earlier, while Ethan was upstairs in his study ironing the tuxedo he would wear to parade his mistress in front of his investors, I had been sitting across a glass conference table with Lucas Vance, the senior managing director of Northstar Capital.

And I hadn't just handed him evidence. I had handed him a detonator.
