Chapter 6 - The Brother's AceEthan was shaking now, sweat beading on his forehead despite the air-conditioned chill of the grand ballroom. He looked around the room, desperately seeking a friendly face among the two hundred investors, lawyers, and bankers who had spent the last hour praising his brilliance.

Every single one of them had stepped back, putting physical distance between themselves and a disgraced executive about to face federal indictment.

"You ruined me," Ethan whispered, staring at me with a mix of pure hatred and utter bewilderment. "After everything we built... you destroyed my entire career over a dress and some earrings?"

"No, Ethan," I said softly, adjusting the lapel of my velvet blazer. "You destroyed your career the moment you thought you could exploit my grief, steal my father's legacy, and parade your mistress around in my clothes while expecting me to stay home and stay quiet."

Just then, the ballroom doors swung open wide.

My brother, Leo—managing partner at one of the top corporate litigation firms in the country, who had flown in on a red-eye specifically to handle the legal cleanup—stroked into the room flanked by two federal marshals and a process server.

Leo didn't look at Ethan. He walked straight up to me, pressing a warm, reassuring hand onto my shoulder.

"Everything is locked down, Oanh," Leo announced loud enough for half the room to hear. "All corporate accounts have been frozen under emergency court order. Personal assets tied to the shell company have been seized pending asset forfeiture hearings. Mr. Cole’s personal bank cards are already declining as we speak."

Right on cue, Ethan’s cell phone buzzed violently in his breast pocket. He pulled it out with trembling fingers. A fraud alert notification flashed across his screen: Account frozen due to suspicious activity.

Ethan dropped his phone. It bounced off the polished marble floor, the screen shattering into a spiderweb of light.
