Chapter 7 - The Walk of ShameThe silence in the grand ballroom was so absolute you could hear the distant hum of traffic outside on Fifth Avenue.

"Mr. Cole, Ms. Blake," Leo said, stepping forward and handing two crisp legal envelopes directly into their hands. "You are both formally served with civil injunctions and subpoenas to appear before a federal grand jury on Monday morning."

Ethan looked completely hollowed out. The sharp, ambitious corporate shark was gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered man who had climbed too high on stolen ladders and forgot that gravity always wins.

He looked at Madison. Madison looked at him with sheer, unadulterated disgust, ripping the diamond drop earrings from her earlobes and tossing them onto the white tablecloth before turning on her heel and marching out of the ballroom, refusing to look back.

Ethan watched her go, then turned his hollow eyes back to me.

"Oanh... please," he choked out, a pathetic, wheezing whisper. "We can fix this. We can go home—"

"There is no home, Ethan," I said, my voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers. "The house on Maple Ridge? My father’s trust owned that too. The eviction notice was filed at 4:00 PM."

I turned my back on him, linking my arm through my brother Leo’s.

"Come on, Leo," I said smoothly, stepping over Ethan’s shattered phone on the marble floor. "Let’s go get a drink. I think we have a lot to celebrate."

As we walked out through the double doors, leaving Ethan standing alone in the center of the vast, silent ballroom under the amber glow of chandeliers that no longer illuminated his future, I didn't look back once.

The deal was frozen. The empire was gone.

And for the first time in three years, I could finally breathe.
