Chapter 4 - The Public UnmaskingA heavy, suffocating silence descended over the table. Several bankers nearby paused with their champagne glasses halfway to their mouths.

"Oanh, honey, please," Ethan hissed, grabbing my elbow with a grip that was entirely too tight. "Let’s not make a scene. Go home. We can talk about this in the morning—"
"Take your hands off me, Ethan," I said coldly, stepping back so sharply that he stumbled.
Diane—oh wait, no mother-in-law here, just pure, unadulterated panic in Ethan's eyes as he realized his entire house of cards was collapsing in real time.
"Security," a deep, resonant voice called out from the edge of the table.
Lucas Vance stepped forward, parting the crowd of stunned investors like the parting of the Red Sea. He wasn't smiling anymore. His expression was a mask of corporate execution.
Ethan swallowed hard, his voice trembling as he tried to pivot. "Mr. Vance! I... I didn't see you there. My wife, she’s... she’s been under a lot of stress lately, she doesn't quite understand the complexities of corporate restructuring—"
"Oh, I understand the restructuring completely, Ethan," Lucas interrupted, his voice cutting through the ballroom like a scalpel. He pulled a thick manila folder from under his arm and dropped it squarely onto the white-clothed dining table, right on top of the artisanal bread basket.

Ethan stared at the folder, paralyzed. "What is this?"
"This," Lucas said smoothly, "is Northstar Capital's official notice of termination regarding the Meridian Analytics funding agreement. Effective immediately."
