Chapter 3 - Down to the FloorBack in the ballroom, the string quartet had transitioned into a smooth jazz rendition of an old standard. The murmurs of corporate ambition hummed through the air.

I smoothed down my tailored black velvet blazer—simple, understated, completely distinct from the flashy blue silk Ethan had forced Madison into—and walked slowly down the sweeping staircase that led directly into the heart of the ballroom.

I didn't rush. I wanted them to enjoy every second of their little charade before the rug was pulled out from under their feet.

Ethan was currently holding court near the center table. Arthur Vance—Northstar’s senior partner and the man holding the pen for the hundred-million-dollar wire transfer—was nodding politely as Ethan gestured expansively with a glass of scotch.

"...and with Northstar's backing, we anticipate scaling our enterprise sector by three hundred percent within the next fiscal quarter," Ethan was saying, his voice rich with supreme, untouchable confidence.

Madison stood right beside him, her hand resting possessively on his sleeve.

I stepped into their circle of amber light.

"That’s a very impressive projection, Ethan," I said, my voice carrying cleanly over the ambient chatter.

Ethan froze. The color drained from his face so fast it looked like someone had pulled a theatre mask off his skin. Madison gasped, her hand flying to her throat—right where my diamond anniversary earrings caught the chandelier light and threw a sharp, blinding spark.

"Oanh?" Ethan choked out, his eyes darting frantically around the table to see who was watching. "What... what are you doing here? I thought you weren't feeling well—"

"Not feeling well enough to miss the celebration of my own dress and my own anniversary earrings?" I tilted my head, looking Madison up and down with an expression of mild, clinical curiosity. "You know, Madison, that silk is dry-clean-only. I’d hate for you to ruin it when security escorts you out of the building."
