Chapter 10 - Walking Forward Together

Five years later, the auditorium of the downtown university was packed to the absolute brim once again.

On stage, a new graduating class sat in neat rows, whispers of excitement floating through the air. In the front row, a little girl with bright, curious eyes and a head of bouncy curls sat kicking her legs against the wooden chair, clutching a small framed photograph in her hands.

In the photograph, a young woman in a cap and gown walked across a stage carrying a sleeping baby against her chest, her head held high and eyes fixed firmly on the horizon.

The dean of the university stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphone.

"Ladies and gentlemen, it is my absolute honor to introduce our commencement keynote speaker this evening—an alumna who has spent the last five years transforming our city's landscape, championing housing equity, and proving that resilience is the most powerful force on earth. Please welcome Dr. Maya Lin."

A thunderous, floor-shaking standing ovation erupted instantly through the auditorium. People didn't wait for permission; they stood immediately, clapping with a deep, reverent admiration.

Maya walked out from the wings of the stage. She wasn't wearing a baby against her chest this time. Lily was sitting in the front row cheering at the top of her lungs, blowing kisses to her mother. But as Maya reached the center of the stage, she paused for a brief moment, looking down at her hands, remembering the trembling grip she had held onto that diploma years ago.

She stepped up to the microphone, her smile radiant and completely at peace. The cameras flashed, capturing the moment for the history books, but Maya no longer cared about the lenses or the headlines.

She leaned into the microphone, her voice carrying warmth and strength across the packed hall.

"Years ago, people asked me how I managed to finish college as a single mother," Maya began, her voice echoing gently through the space. "They thought I was walking an impossible road alone."

She paused, casting a loving glance down toward the front row where Lily was waving frantically.

"They were wrong," Maya smiled brightly. "I wasn't walking alone. I was carrying the reason I refused to give up—and today, we are all walking together."
