Chapter 25 - The Ambush at Midnight

Maya’s survival instincts—forged through years of working night shifts, dodging eviction notices, and fighting corporate empires—flared instantly. She didn't hesitate. She threw her door open, lunged out onto the asphalt, and sprinted toward the bright, glowing entrance of the community center just twenty yards away.
"Hey! Stop right there!" one of the figures shouted, breaking into a heavy run behind her.
The sound of rubber soles slapping against the concrete echoed loudly in the empty parking lot. Maya’s lungs burned with the cold night air, her heels clicking rhythmically as she pushed her legs to move faster than they ever had before. She reached the glass double doors, slammed her palm against the emergency release button, and tumbled inside just as heavy hands grabbed desperately at the air behind her collar.
The automatic doors hissed shut and locked securely with a heavy metallic click.
Maya pressed her back against the reinforced glass, breathing heavily, her chest heaving as she watched two masked men standing outside under the yellow streetlamp, staring at her through the glass with cold, calculating eyes. They didn't attempt to smash the glass; they simply turned around and walked away into the shadows as quietly as they had appeared.
Inside the brightly lit lobby, Chloe came running down the central staircase, holding a tablet in her hand, her face pale.
"Maya! What happened? The security alarm on the southern perimeter just tripped!" Chloe gasped, stopping short as she saw Maya’s disheveled appearance and racing breath.
"We’ve been compromised," Maya said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through her veins. She pushed herself away from the door and walked quickly toward the conference room. "Marcus’s office was remotely wiped. The fifty million dollars isn't a federal restitution grant—it’s a digital Trojan horse planted by a global shadow network called the Orion Syndicate."
Chloe stared at her, color draining completely from her face. "A syndicate? Maya, are you insane? That sounds like a spy thriller, not real estate law!"
"It’s entirely real," Maya said, slamming her briefcase onto the conference table and pulling out her encrypted burner phone. "They used our legal trust as a conduit to launder syndical capital. If the federal authorities trace those routing numbers back to our account before we report it, we won't just lose the trust—we’ll be indicted as federal criminals for money laundering."
"Then we call the FBI right now," Chloe urged, reaching for her phone.
"No," Maya stopped her, her eyes flashing with fierce, calculated resolve. "If we call the FBI through standard channels, the syndicate's operatives inside the federal bureaucracy will intercept the file before it hits a clean desk. We need to go around the system entirely."

"And how do we do that?" Marcus’s voice echoed from the doorway as he rushed into the room, holding his laptop open with a smoking, fried circuit board. "They fried my hard drive remotely, Maya. We are completely blind."
"Not completely," Maya replied, pulling a small, encrypted USB drive out from the lining of her briefcase—a secure backup she had secretly created the moment Julian handed her the manila folder. "Julian gave us the access keys. Now we use them to break into their vault before they lock us out forever."
