Chapter 14 - Human Chain

The roar of diesel engines shook the concrete beneath Maya’s feet as the heavy bulldozers rumbled to a halt twenty yards from the entrance of the community trust housing block. A thick cloud of gray exhaust hung in the damp morning air, smelling heavily of unburned fuel and burning rubber.
The lead security contractor—a hulking, scarred man with a shaved head and a tactical vest—stepped forward, his boots crunching heavily on the gravel. He didn't carry a clipboard or legal notices; he carried a heavy zip-tie handcuff dispenser clipped to his belt.
"This property is under emergency municipal seizure by order of the urban development board," the contractor barked through a megaphone, his voice grating and mechanical. "All unauthorized personnel have three minutes to clear the perimeter. Anyone remaining will be arrested for trespassing and obstruction of lawful municipal operations."
From behind Maya, the heavy wooden doors of the housing block creaked open. One by one, residents poured out onto the street. Elderly women holding rosary beads, young mothers clutching their toddlers just as Maya had clutched Lily years ago, and young workers who had spent their entire lives in this neighborhood stepped past Maya, silently taking their places.
No one screamed. No one threw punches.
Instead, they walked forward in total, disciplined silence, linking arms to form an unbroken human chain directly across the paved access road.
Maya stepped to the front of the line, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Chloe and Marcus. Her heart beat with a steady, rhythmic drum, entirely devoid of fear. She remembered the day she crossed the graduation stage, how the laughter of the crowd had tried to shrink her into nothingness. She remembered the cold studio apartment, the eviction notices, the golden cage of the Sterling Foundation. She had survived every single attempt to erase her. She wasn't about to let anonymous corporate ghouls erase her home now.
"You want to pave this street?" Maya called out, her voice cutting clearly through the roar of idling diesel engines. "You’re going to have to drive right through us."
The lead security contractor’s face tightened into a cruel sneer. He lowered the megaphone and gestured sharply to his men. "Move them."

The line of tactical guards marched forward, riot shields raised, boots stomping in unison. The distance between the two forces closed down to ten feet... five feet...
Suddenly, the screen of Maya’s phone—tucked securely into her breast pocket—flashed violently, buzzing with a high-priority emergency broadcast alert that echoed from every single phone held by the hundreds of citizens standing behind her.
