Chapter 27 - The Mainframe

Inside, the warehouse was a cavernous, cathedral-like space filled not with cargo, but with rows of towering, liquid-cooled server racks humming with a deep, hypnotic bass vibration. Blue and green indicator lights blinked frantically across thousands of circuit boards, casting eerie, shifting patterns over the concrete floor.

"We need to find mainframe terminal zero-one," Chloe whispered, reading the digital schematics on her tablet. "It should be right in the center."

They hurried down the narrow metal aisle between the humming server banks. The air was ice-cold, chilled by industrial air conditioning designed to keep the massive processors from overheating.

At the far end of the central aisle stood a massive, black obsidian terminal console bearing a silver emblem—a stylized Orion constellation etched into the metal casing.

"This is it," Maya said, stepping up to the console. She pulled the encrypted USB drive from her pocket and slid it smoothly into the primary data port.

Instantly, the obsidian screen flared to life with a blinding white light. A stark, text-based prompt appeared on the display:

ACCESS GRANTED. WELCOME, DR. LIN. INITIATING DATA PURGE.

"It’s working!" Chloe whispered excitedly. "The firewall is collapsing. The laundered funds are being automatically routed back to the federal treasury account!"

Suddenly, a loud, blaring red siren pierced the silence of the warehouse. Overhead, emergency strobe lights began to flash violently, casting crimson shadows across the server racks.

SECURITY ALERT: UNAUTHORIZED DATA EXTRACTION DETECTED. SYSTEM LOCKDOWN INITIATED.

"Damn it! The terminal traced our signature!" Chloe yelled, her fingers flying across the console interface to override the lockdown sequence. "They're locking down the exit doors remotely!"

Before Maya could reply, heavy footsteps echoed from the far end of the warehouse aisle. Three men in sleek tactical gear, bearing no insignia but carrying heavy submachine guns, rounded the corner and marched straight toward them.

"Step away from the console!" the lead tactical operative shouted, leveling his weapon directly at Maya’s chest.
