Chapter 18 - The Final Gambit

The federal courtroom was packed tighter than it had ever been. Flashbulbs blinded the spectators as Alistair Sterling walked in through the front doors, flanked not by corporate lawyers, but by federal marshals and state representatives carrying an emergency legislative bill signed by the Governor himself.

The trial for the historic land trust had been fast-tracked directly to the federal district court under national security and infrastructure emergency provisions—a terrifyingly corrupt legal maneuver designed to bypass local juries entirely.

Sitting at the plaintiffs' table, Maya felt the crushing weight of the entire apparatus of the American political and financial elite bearing down upon her. Across the aisle, Alistair Sterling sat with legs crossed, his expression one of absolute, unshakeable confidence. He had won before the gavel even struck. The legislative bill in the judge’s hand legally nullified every historical deed, rendering the community trust legally non-existent.

The presiding judge, a gray-haired man whose campaign donations over the past decade traced directly back to Sterling-affiliated PACs, cleared his throat and adjusted his microphone.

"The court has reviewed the emergency legislative statute SB-904 passed by the state senate yesterday evening," the judge announced in a flat, monotonous tone. "Pursuant to state law, historical public trust designations predating 1960 are hereby dissolved, and all disputed properties revert to municipal infrastructure control under Aegis Holdings."

A collective gasp of horror rippled through the gallery. Residents standing in the back broke down in tears, realizing that despite all their courage, all their fighting, the machine had simply rewritten the laws to crush them legally.

Alistair Sterling offered a slow, victorious smile from across the courtroom.

The judge picked up his wooden gavel, raising it to strike the final blow. "Case dismissed with prejudice—"

"Wait, Your Honor!"

A sharp, clear voice rang out from the back of the courtroom.

Every head whipped around. Standing in the center aisle, holding a thick manila envelope, was Chloe Vance. She wasn't wearing her usual casual protest gear; she wore her father’s pristine legal robes—or rather, the subpoenaed financial records she had secretly downloaded from her father’s private estate servers before his arrest.

"Counselor, approach the bench immediately or be held in contempt," the judge barked angrily.

Chloe didn't hesitate. She marched straight down the center aisle, bypassing the defense table, and slammed a heavy stack of documents directly onto the judge’s desk.

"Your Honor, before you strike that gavel, you might want to look at Exhibit Z-9," Chloe said, her voice ringing with absolute clarity. "State statute SB-904 is unconstitutional under federal interstate commerce laws. Alistair Sterling didn't just forge municipal deeds; he used federal pension funds—specifically the State Teachers' Retirement System—as collateral to finance Aegis Holdings' illegal land grabs without legislative authorization."

Alistair Sterling’s face suddenly drained of all color, the aristocratic composure shattering instantly into raw, naked panic.
