Chapter 26 - Into the Lion’s Den

The rain began to pour as Maya’s car sped down the coastal highway toward the abandoned industrial shipyard on the outskirts of the city—the very docks where the Orion Syndicate maintained its primary digital server relay station.
In the passenger seat, Chloe frantically typed away on an encrypted tactical laptop, while Marcus sat in the back seat monitoring police scanner frequencies.
"We're ten minutes out from the perimeter fence," Chloe announced, her fingers flying across the keyboard. "According to the backdoor security keys Julian provided, the server relay station is unmanned at this hour—it's entirely automated by a central mainframe. All we need to do is plug our encrypted drive directly into the master terminal, initiate a data purge, and redirect the fifty million dollars back into the federal Treasury's public account."
"And if it’s a trap?" Marcus asked from the back, his voice tight with anxiety.
"Then we go down fighting," Maya said simply, her eyes fixed steadily on the dark, wet road ahead. She had walked across a graduation stage with a baby in her arms while a roomful of cynics laughed at her. She had stared down corporate billionaires and corrupt city councils. She wasn't about to let a shadow syndicate intimidate her now.
The car slowed to a halt behind a dense row of overgrown pine trees near the abandoned pier. Through the sheets of driving rain, a massive, windowless concrete warehouse loomed ahead, surrounded by high chain-link fences topped with coiled barbed wire. A single red warning light blinked rhythmically above the heavy steel access door.
Maya cut the headlights. "Stay here in the car with the scanner, Marcus. If local security or federal units are dispatched to this sector, flash your high beams twice. Chloe, you're with me."
The two women slipped out into the freezing downpour, pulling their waterproof hoods down low. Moving silently through the shadows, they reached the perimeter fence. Using a pair of heavy industrial bolt cutters Chloe had stashed in the trunk, Maya snipped through the chain-link in under thirty seconds, creating an opening just large enough to slip through.

They crossed the open gravel yard, keeping low against the concrete walls of the warehouse, until they reached a small side maintenance door. Chloe pulled a small digital hacking device from her jacket pocket, plugging it directly into the electronic keypad lock.
With a soft beep, the green LED light flashed, and the heavy steel door clicked open.
