Chapter 7 - The Fallout

Within ten minutes of Maya’s live broadcast walkout, the internet exploded for the second time in her life. But this time, it wasn't a heartwarming fairy tale—it was a full-scale corporate catastrophe.
Hashtags like #StandWithMayaLin and #SterlingFoundationExposed trended globally within the hour. Stock prices for the Sterling Foundation’s parent real estate holdings plummeted by twelve percent before the afternoon trading bell even rang. Legal notices from the foundation's high-priced defense attorneys arrived at Maya’s penthouse apartment before she had even finished packing her bags.
She didn't care. As she tossed her clothes back into battered duffel bags, a profound sense of lightness settled over her chest. The golden cage was gone. She was broke again, stripped of her fellowship, her stipend, and her luxury penthouse—but for the first time in months, she could breathe.
There was a frantic knock on the penthouse door. Maya pulled it open to find Chloe standing there, breathing heavily, clutching a cardboard box filled with personal items.
"My dad just disowned me officially," Chloe said, letting out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "Frozen my credit cards, locked me out of the family trust, and threatened to sue me for corporate espionage. We are officially broke, unemployed, and public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public public enemies number one."
Maya couldn't help it—a bubble of laughter escaped her lips. She stepped forward and pulled the wealthy heiress-turned-rebel into a tight, fierce embrace. "Welcome to the real world, Chloe."
"So, what do we do now?" Chloe asked, pulling back with a determined glint in her eye. "We can't just run away. My dad's legal team is going to try to bury us in injunctions, and the foundation is threatening to sue you for breach of contract damages totaling five million dollars."
Maya walked over to the coffee table, picking up the framed photograph of her walking across the graduation stage with Lily sleeping against her chest. The flash captured in that single frame had started a war, and she wasn't about to surrender now.

"We don't run," Maya said quietly, her voice ringing with absolute resolve. "We fight back. Legally. Publicly. And we do it together."
Using what little cash she had saved from her diner days, Maya and Chloe set up a makeshift legal defense fund operating out of a cramped, damp basement office donated pro bono by a civil rights attorney named Marcus Vance—no relation to Robert Vance, much to Chloe’s immense relief. Word spread like wildfire through the community. Tenants facing eviction from the low-income housing block began lining up outside the basement door, clutching their lease agreements and crying tears of gratitude. Maya wasn't just a viral symbol anymore; she was their commander-in-chief.
