Chapter 4 - The Unlikely Ally

Chloe slammed the door of her sports car, her designer sunglasses perched on top of her head. Her face was flushed, and she looked entirely out of place in the gritty, working-class neighborhood.
"Maya! Wait!" Chloe called out, jogging over across the cracked asphalt.
Maya instinctively pulled Lily closer, her protective instincts flaring up instantly. "What do you want, Chloe? Haven't you done enough?"
Chloe stopped a few feet away, holding up her hands in a gesture of total surrender. Her expression wasn't mocking or arrogant; it was desperate. "I know how this looks. I know I was a complete monster at the graduation ceremony. But you have to listen to me. Do not sign those papers."
The courier in the charcoal suit stiffened, stepping forward smoothly. "Pardon me, miss, but this is a private legal matter between Ms. Lin and the Sterling Foundation. I must ask you to step away."
"Shut up," Chloe snapped, glaring at the courier with surprising venom. She turned back to Maya. "Maya, my dad is Robert Vance. He’s on the board of real estate investors in this city. When your photo blew up yesterday, I started digging into who actually funds the Sterling Foundation. It’s a front."
Maya’s heart skipped a beat. "A front for what?"
"A predatory media conglomerate," Chloe said, lowering her voice urgently. "They buy up viral human-interest stories, exploit the subjects for massive corporate PR campaigns, and then lock them into ironclad contracts that strip away their autonomy. If you sign that paper, you don't own your story anymore. They do. They can twist it, manipulate it, or silence you whenever it suits their bottom line."
Maya looked down at the contract in her hands, then up at the courier, whose professional composure had cracked just enough to reveal a flicker of unease.
"Ms. Lin, don't listen to this erratic young woman," the courier said, his voice dropping an octave. "The foundation is offering you financial salvation. Your alternative is eviction by tomorrow morning."
Maya stood at the precipice of a terrifying choice. On one side lay corporate exploitation wrapped in a golden lifeline; on the other, absolute poverty, homelessness, and the crushing uncertainty of how she would feed her child tomorrow.
"Give me the pen," Maya said quietly.

Chloe gasped. "Maya, are you insane? You're walking right into a trap!"
"I don't have a choice, Chloe," Maya said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. She uncapped the pen and pressed the tip against the paper. "Hunger doesn't wait for a better option."
