Chapter 11 - The Shadow Over the EstateLife inside the Moretti estate was nothing like I had imagined. I expected a fortress of cold stone and constant paranoia, but behind the heavy iron gates, it was a world of quiet luxury, hidden gardens, and a bizarre kind of domestic peace.

Lukas was growing fast. Every morning, he would toddle down the long marble hallway, his small bare feet slapping against the floor, straight into my bedroom. He’d climb up onto the mattress, poke my cheek with a sticky finger until I woke up, and demand his morning bottle.
Dante was always nearby, watching us with a quiet, intense gaze that made my stomach flutter in a way I refused to admit to myself.
"You're spoiling him," Dante said one morning, leaning against the doorframe of the kitchen while I chased Lukas around the marble island with a slice of banana bread.
"He's a growing boy, not a mafia recruit," I shot back, laughing as Lukas made a high-pitched squeal and dove behind my ankles. "Besides, someone has to teach him how to smile around here. Your resting scowl is rubbing off on him."
Dante's lips twitched upward into that rare, devastating smile. "A Moretti doesn't scowl. He projects authority."
"Right. And a toddler covered in banana puree is projecting a hostile takeover," I teased.
The warmth in the room shifted instantly. Dante stepped closer, closing the distance between us with that predatory grace. The air grew heavy, thick with unspoken words and a tension that had been building between us for months. He reached out, his ink-stained hand—the dragon tattoo coiling darkly over his knuckles—gently brushing a crumb from my cheek. His fingers lingered, tracing the line of my jaw down to the faint crescent scar near my left eye.
"Mara," he murmured, his voice dropping an octave, husky and low.
Before he could say anything more, a sharp, piercing alarm echoed through the house.
Not the fire alarm. The red-alert klaxon wired directly into the estate's perimeter security grid.

Dante’s expression froze, all warmth vanishing in a single heartbeat, replaced instantly by the cold, ruthless apex predator I had met at the restaurant.
"Stay here with Lukas," Dante ordered, spinning on his heel and drawing his sidearm in one fluid motion as he sprinted toward the command center.
