Chapter 15 - The Jailhouse ConfessionThe following morning, I sat across a heavy security glass partition in the county detention center holding a telephone receiver. On the other side sat Daniel.

He looked unrecognizable. His hair was shaved short, his face hollow and scarred by prison politics, wearing an orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frame. The arrogant tech executive was completely gone, replaced by a ghost of his own making.

"Vivian came to my house last night," I said coldly into the phone, my voice transmitting clearly through the intercom speaker.

Daniel flinched, his head dropping into his hands. "I… I heard. Her lawyer called my public defender this morning. She’s been placed under psychiatric evaluation. Claire… I am so sorry. I didn't know she was going to do that."

"Save your breath, Daniel," I replied, leaning closer to the glass. "Vivian claimed yesterday that you're getting out on appeal. Is that another one of your family's delusions?"

Daniel raised his head, his eyes swimming with desperate tears. "There is no appeal, Claire. My defense attorney dropped me yesterday. The federal prosecutor added three more felony counts of interstate wire fraud and perjury. I’m looking at fifteen years minimum with no parole."

A profound silence settled between us. Eleven years of marriage, gaslighting, emotional abuse, and stolen inheritance—reduced to a cold, sterile prison booth.

"Why, Daniel?" I asked quietly, searching his face for a shred of genuine remorse. "Why steal my father's life insurance? Why treat me like dirt when I gave you my youth, my career, and my loyalty?"

Daniel let out a bitter, broken laugh that sounded more like a sob. "Because you were strong, Claire. From the day I met you, you had a quiet fire that terrfied me. My mother and sister convinced me that if I didn't keep you subdued, if I didn't strip you of your confidence and your financial independence, you would eventually realize you didn't need me at all."

He looked up, meeting my eyes through the scratched security glass.

"They were right, you know. I tried to cage a queen, and she burned my entire kingdom to the ground."

"Enjoy your cell, Daniel," I said, setting the receiver back onto its cradle.
