Chapter 17 - The Stranger at the DoorThe gentle clinking of silverware and laughter filled the dining room as dinner wound down to a peaceful close. The children had excused themselves to the living room to watch a movie, leaving my closest friends and me chatting over cups of artisanal coffee.

Suddenly, the front doorbell chimed.

I paused, frowning slightly. It was a Saturday evening, and delivery services rarely dropped packages at the front entrance this late.

"Do you want me to get that, Claire?" my lead project manager, Elena, asked, offering to stand up.

"No, it's fine, I'll get it," I said, smoothing down my emerald dress and walking toward the grand foyer.

I pulled open the heavy oak front door expecting a courier or a neighbor. Instead, standing on the porch beneath the amber light was a tall, distinguished middle-aged man in a sharp tailored suit. He had silver-streaked hair, kind eyes, and a nervous expression that immediately put me on guard.

"Can I help you?" I asked, keeping my hand resting on the interior security panel.

The man swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly as he removed his leather gloves. "You must be Claire. I know this is an incredible shock, and I apologize for showing up unannounced like this."

"Who are you?" I asked, my voice tightening.

"My name is Julian Vance—no relation to your attorney," he said quickly, holding up his hands in a placating gesture. "I am the former senior managing partner of Meridian Holdings from over a decade ago. Before Daniel and Victoria corrupted the firm's internal ledgers."

My eyes narrowed. "What do you want with me?"

"I don't want anything from you, Claire. I want to give you something," Julian said softly, stepping forward and pulling a worn, leather-bound journal from his briefcase. "Before your father passed away eleven years ago... he met with me in secret."
