Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the PastMargaret and Vivian stood frozen by the doorway, realizing too late that panic had made them utter the one confession they should have taken to their graves.

“Repeat that,” I whispered, my voice chillingly low as I pulled my phone from my pocket and tapped the screen to ensure the voice-recorder app was running at maximum sensitivity. “Say it again about my father’s life insurance payout.”
Margaret turned pale, clapping a trembling hand over her mouth. Vivian’s bravado completely evaporated, her face twisting into panic.
“We… we didn't mean… you misunderstood—” Vivian stammered, backing toward the hallway door.
“Security,” I said calmly into the intercom speaker beside the door. “Please escort two trespassers out of the building immediately. They are refusing to leave.”
Within two minutes, two burly building security guards in crisp uniforms appeared in the hallway. Without giving Margaret and Vivian another word, the guards escorted them toward the elevators as they hurled frantic, whispered threats over their shoulders.
As the elevator doors slid shut, sealing their defeat, I dropped onto the velvet sofa, my hands shaking slightly.
The pieces of a puzzle I hadn't even known I was playing suddenly snapped into terrifying focus.
My father’s sudden death. The missing probate documents. Daniel’s sudden financial rise right after our wedding. The way Margaret and Vivian had always treated me like an unwanted servant in their presence—not because I was from a lower social class, but because they knew I was the rightful owner of the empire they had built their entire status upon. They didn't despise me because I was beneath them; they despised me because I was their victim.
My phone rang. It was Marcus.
“Claire, you won't believe what just dropped on my desk,” Marcus said excitedly without waiting for a greeting. “Daniel’s corporate defense team just filed a motion to withdraw. They found out about the offshore accounts, but more importantly, a whistleblower from Daniel’s old college fraternity just forwarded us an archived ledger from eleven years ago showing a fraudulent wire transfer from an estate account directly into Daniel’s personal account.”
“It was my father’s life insurance policy, Marcus,” I said, my voice steady, carrying the weight of absolute resolve. “Margaret and Vivian just came to my apartment and confessed to it on tape.”
There was a brief pause on the other end of the line.

“Send me that audio file right now,” Marcus breathed, his professional demeanor turning razor-sharp. “Claire, this isn't just a messy divorce anymore. This is grand larceny, forgery, and federal wire fraud. We aren't just going to take half their assets in the settlement. We are going to dismantle the entire Mercer dynasty down to the bare foundation.”
The final showdown approaches. How does Daniel attempt his last desperate move in Chapter 9?
