Chapter 5 - The Corporate MistressThe photographs spilling across the white tablecloth of Trattoria Bellini weren't bank statements. They were crisp, time-stamped images of Daniel stepping out of an exclusive downtown penthouse with a tall, elegant blonde woman—none other than Victoria Sterling, the senior vice president of marketing at Daniel’s own firm, and coincidentally, the primary signatory on Meridian Holdings.

Daniel froze, his fingers trembling as he clutched a photo of himself kissing Victoria outside a luxury resort in Cabo San Lucas from six months ago—precisely during the week he told me he was attending an "out-of-state corporate leadership retreat."

“Where… where did you get these?” Daniel choked out, his voice a terrified whisper.

“Did you really think your digital footprint stopped at bank transfers, Daniel?” I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table, locking my eyes onto his darting, panicked gaze. “Victoria helped you funnel marital assets into Meridian Holdings because she was skimming a percentage for her own off-shore accounts. You weren't just funding your sister’s shopping sprees, were you? You were funding your second life.”

Daniel opened and closed his mouth like a fish out of water. The confident, domineering husband who had tried to intimidate me minutes ago was completely dismantled.

“Claire, listen to me, I can explain,” he stammered, grabbing blindly across the table for my hand. “It’s not what you think! Victoria meant nothing! It was just a… a momentary lapse in judgment! Mother knows nothing about this, I swear!”

I pulled my hand back as if his touch were toxic.

“Mother knows everything, Daniel. Margaret helped you orchestrate the asset concealment from day one. That’s why she looked so terrified when I slapped Vivian—she knew the house of cards was shaking.”

Before Daniel could formulate another lie, a tall figure in a sharp charcoal suit approached our table. It was Marcus Vance, accompanied by two men in official jackets.

“Daniel Mercer?” Marcus asked politely, flashing a badge-holder identifying his companion as a federal court-appointed forensic investigator. “You are being served with an expanded injunction for corporate embezzlement, asset concealment, and marital fraud. Any further attempt to contact my client outside of legal channels will result in immediate detention for contempt of court.”

The restaurant patrons at nearby tables turned their heads, murmuring quietly as the official documents were slapped down beside Daniel’s untouched water glass.

Daniel sat paralyzed, staring blankly at the tabletop as the reality of his total destruction set in.

I stood up smoothly, adjusted my emerald dress, and picked up my handbag.

“Enjoy your dinner alone, Daniel,” I whispered. “Or better yet, call Victoria. Maybe she’ll share her offshore accounts with you.”
