Chapter 7 - The Inheritance IllusionMargaret gasped, clutching her chest as she stared at me as if I had turned into a literal monster.

“You… you struck my daughter again!” Margaret cried out, rushing to steady a weeping Vivian. “Assault! Police! Someone arrest this woman!”

“In my own residence, protecting my personal safety against hostile intruders?” I smiled thinly, tapping the smart-home security camera mounted in the corner of the ceiling. “Every second of this interaction is recording in high definition, audio and video. If either of you doesn't step out of this apartment in the next ten seconds, I’ll have building security escort you out in handcuffs for trespassing.”

Vivian lowered her hand, her eyes blazing with absolute hatred. But beneath the anger, I saw something else for the first time: absolute, unadulterated terror.

“You think you’re so high and mighty, Claire,” Vivian spat through her teeth, her voice trembling. “You think you’re taking everything from Daniel. But you don't even know the truth about where our money came from! You think Daniel built this empire? The Mercer fortune was built on a lie—and the house you fought so hard to put a lien on doesn't even belong to us!”

I raised an eyebrow, motioning toward the door. “Save the dramatic soap opera monologues for your lawyer, Vivian. Door’s right there.”

“It was your father!” Margaret blurted out, her voice cracking desperately as she realized I wasn't bluffing about the security escort.

I froze. The chill in the room suddenly intensified.

“What did you say?” I asked, stepping forward.

Margaret swallowed hard, her chest heaving. “The seed money for Daniel’s first tech startup eleven years ago… it wasn't from our family estate. It was stolen from your father’s estate right after he passed away! Daniel forged your signature on your father’s life insurance payout documents before we were even married, and we used it to buy the Mercer family holdings!”

The room went dead silent.

My heart stopped beating for a fraction of a second. Eleven years ago, when my father died unexpectedly, his final insurance policy of half a million dollars had mysteriously vanished into "probate complications," leaving me with nothing while Daniel conveniently launched his business a month later, claiming a "generous angel investor" had backed him.

All along, it wasn't just marital infidelity or corporate embezzlement.
