Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the OfficeThe morning sun cast harsh, bright light across the hotel room. Lily and Noah were still fast asleep, tangled in white hotel sheets. I had barely slept an hour, my mind racing through corporate law, forensic accounting, and strategic retaliation.

I needed professional firepower. Not just any lawyer—I needed someone who ate corporate predators and narcissistic families for breakfast.

By 8:00 AM, I was sitting in the sleek, glass-walled conference room of Sterling & Vance Law Firm, located on the thirty-second floor overlooking the city skyline. Across the mahogany table sat Marcus Vance, a formidable senior partner with sharp silver hair and eyes that missed nothing. He had represented my father in a messy partnership dispute years ago, and though we hadn’t spoken in a decade, his office was my first port of call.

“Well, Claire,” Marcus said, sliding my printed bank statements and LLC filings back across the table. “Your husband and his family didn’t just play dirty; they played exceptionally stupid. Moving marital assets into a family-controlled shell corporation right under your nose constitutes financial fraud and fraudulent conveyance.”

“Can we freeze everything?” I asked, my voice steady, betraying none of the exhaustion I felt.

“Instantly,” Marcus replied, leaning back in his leather chair and crossing his arms. “More importantly, because the house was deeded into a trust without your notarized signature or consent—which is a blatant forgery of your marital rights in this state—we can slap a lis pendens on the property by noon. They won't be able to sell, refinance, or breathe without my permission.”

Marcus paused, studying me closely. “You’ve changed quite a bit since I last saw you chasing butterflies in your dad’s garden, Claire. Most wives in your position would be crying in a corner. You look like a general preparing for a siege.”

“Eleven years of being treated like a doormat teaches you how to forge iron, Marcus,” I said coldly. “And there’s more. Vivian physically assaulted me at our anniversary dinner. I have medical documentation of the bruising on my cheek from the urgent care clinic I visited at 3:00 AM, plus eyewitness testimony from my children and the caterer.”

Marcus let out a low whistle, a grin spreading across his face. “Assault charges combined with financial fraud? Daniel’s corporate firm is going to drop him faster than a hot potato the moment we file. They hate bad publicity.”

“Let’s execute,” I said, standing up and buttoning my blazer. “I want them to feel the floor drop out from under them before lunch.”

An hour later, as Marcus’s legal team filed the emergency motions, my phone buzzed incessantly in my purse. I pulled it out. Five missed calls from Daniel. Three frantic texts from Margaret.

And then, a call from an unfamiliar local number. I swiped to answer.

“Claire? Where the hell are you?” Daniel’s voice cracked through the receiver, breathless and panicked. “The bank just locked all my business accounts! And some people from the county sheriff’s office just slapped a notice on the front door of the house! What have you done?”

“I just served the appetizer, Daniel,” I whispered into the phone. “See you in court.”

The trap snaps shut, but the Mercer family has a dirty trick up their sleeves. Find out what happens in Chapter 4...
