Julian walked into the foyer, declining a seat, and opened the leather journal right on the console table beneath the grand mirror. The pages were filled with my father's familiar, elegant handwriting.
"Your father knew his health was failing," Julian explained, pointing to a dated entry from twelve years ago. "He also knew Daniel Mercer was a parasitic opportunist. Your father didn't just have a standard life insurance policy—he set up an irrevocable family trust specifically protected against corporate interference. Daniel didn't steal your inheritance; he only stole a fraction of it. The bulk of your father's true empire—hundreds of acres of prime commercial land and tech patents—was locked away in an offshore trust that only unlocked when you reached thirty-five years of age, or when Daniel's fraudulent conspiracy was legally dismantled."
I stared down at the pages, my eyes tracking the legal seal stamped at the bottom of the document.
"Today is your thirty-fifth birthday, Claire," Julian said softly.
The room seemed to spin. Today was my birthday—a milestone I had been too busy surviving and rebuilding to even celebrate.
