Chapter 11 - The Baltimore Ghost

The ink on Dr. Sterling’s forced confession was barely dry when Rocco’s encrypted satellite phone buzzed violently on the obsidian desk.
Rocco glanced at the screen, his dark eyes instantly narrowing into razor-sharp slits. "Put it on speaker, Bruno."
A raspy, electronic-distorted voice filled the sterile silence of the underground lab. "Marchetti. You thought cutting off the Syndicate of the Sun's hand in Italy would stop the bleeding? Baltimore remembers Dr. Arya Vance. And she belongs to us."
Arya froze, the name of her old city hitting her chest like a physical blow. The voice belonged to Victor Thorne—her former mentor at Johns Hopkins and the hidden mastermind behind the conspiracy that destroyed her life three years ago.
"Thorne," Arya whispered, her knuckles whitening as she gripped the edge of the steel counter.
"You left a loose end, Doctor," Thorne mocked through the speaker. "Your mother. She’s currently resting comfortably in St. Jude’s Memorial in Baltimore. It would be such a shame if her dialysis machine experienced a sudden, irreversible power surge."

Rocco didn't flinch. He didn't yell. A cold, terrifying aura of absolute lethal intent radiated off him as he picked up his Beretta, chambering a round with a sharp, echoing clack.
"Thorne," Rocco spoke into the phone, his voice smooth as glass and deadly as a guillotine. "Listen to me very carefully. If a single drop of saline in that hospital room is out of place by the time my private jet touches down in Maryland tomorrow morning, I won't just kill you. I will dismantle your entire medical dynasty piece by piece while you watch."
