Chapter 6 - The Offer

The nursery fell into a heavy, exhausted silence. The heart monitor beeped rhythmically. Leo was breathing on his own now, his chest rising and falling in a steady, peaceful cadence.
Rocco walked slowly over to the crib, gently brushing a lock of dark hair off his son’s forehead. Then, he turned around and looked at Arya.
She stood near the doorway, her uniform ruined, her hands still stained with blood, waiting for her dismissal. She expected to be thrown out, or worse, silenced to protect the Marchetti family secrets.
Rocco walked over to her, stopping just a foot away. He was a head taller than her, imposing and formidable.
"You saved my son," Rocco said, his voice entirely devoid of its previous menace, replaced by a strange, quiet reverence. "In my world, debts are always paid. Blood for blood. Life for life."
"I don't want your blood money, Mr. Marchetti," Arya said quietly. "Just let me leave. Let me go back to my mother's dialysis payments, and forget you ever saw me."
"Leave?" Rocco let out a short, humorless bark of laughter. "You think I'd let the only brilliant surgeon who can save my son walk out of my fortress? Especially now that every rival syndicate in Europe knows an attempt was made on my heir?"

Arya’s eyes narrowed. "What are you talking about?"
"Vanessa didn't act alone," Rocco said, pulling a golden cigar case from his pocket and snapping it open. "She was funded by the Syndicate of the Sun—my biggest rivals in Marseille. They wanted to break me by taking my son." He looked up, his dark eyes locking onto hers with absolute finality. "Which means you aren't safe out there. The moment you step off this cliff, their hit squads will be waiting for you."
