Chapter 14 - The Empty Cage

"She's gone," Arya breathed, a cold wave of panic washing over her as she rushed to the empty hospital bed. The sheets were still warm.

On the bedside table sat a pristine white envelope stamped with a red wax seal bearing the insignia of the Black Cross.

Rocco stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the corners for tripwires or cameras. He picked up the envelope, slit the top with his thumb, and pulled out a single sheet of heavy parchment.

He read the note aloud, his voice dropping into an icy register:

"Dr. Vance, Mr. Marchetti. Impressive entrance. If you ever want to see Elena Vance alive again, leave your private army at the gates and walk into the Baltimore Harbor Abandoned Dry Dock alone. Bring the infant Leo as collateral. You have one hour."

Arya’s hands shook as she grabbed the edge of the table. "It's a trap. They don't want a trade; they want the baby's stem cells. They know Leo survived an engineered pathogen—his blood holds the key to their immortality research."

Rocco crumpled the note in his fist, his expression turning to pure granite. "Then we give them what they want. But we rewrite the ending."
