Chapter 5 - The Stand-Off

The entire room froze. Miller and his paramedics ducked behind the medical carts. Bruno raised his assault rifle, his finger hovering over the trigger, but he couldn't fire without risking Leo’s life.
"You wouldn't dare," Rocco hissed, freezing in his tracks.
"Try me!" Vanessa shrieked, her mascara running down her cheeks, her hand shaking violently on the trigger of the derringer. "I've lost everything anyway! If I can't have this estate, no one can!"
Arya stood silently off to the side, her mind racing. She watched the angle of Vanessa’s wrist, the trembling of her fingers, and the narrow gap between the mahogany crib posts. She didn't look at the gun; she looked at the heavy crystal vase sitting on the marble vanity table just two feet to Vanessa's left.
Vanessa’s eyes flicked toward Rocco for a fraction of a second—just a micro-moment of hesitation.
It was all Arya needed.
With the explosive speed of her old surgical training, Arya grabbed the heavy crystal vase and hurled it across the room. Crash!
The vase shattered against Vanessa’s wrist. The derringer fired wildly, the bullet embedding harmlessly into the plaster ceiling, showering the nursery in white dust.
Before Vanessa could recover, Bruno lunged forward, tackling her to the floor and pinning her arms behind her back with a sickening crunch of bone.

"Get her out of my sight," Rocco commanded, his voice shaking with suppressed fury. "Lock her in the basement holding cells. We'll deal with her later."
Bruno dragged the screaming, thrashing woman out of the nursery, leaving a trail of Chanel perfume and hysteria in their wake.
