Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

"Who the hell are you?" Bruno demanded, his finger whitening on the trigger. "An assassin? A spy from the Moretti family?"

"She's a freak!" Vanessa screamed, marching into the room and pointing a trembling, manicured finger at Arya's blood-stained uniform. "Rocco, she tried to murder your son! Look at her! She’s covered in his blood! Shoot her right now!"

Rocco didn't move. He was staring at Arya, not with the blind rage of a mafia don, but with the terrifying, razor-sharp analytical gaze of a man who ruled an underground empire through absolute paranoia. He slowly stood up, towering over her, his dark eyes scanning every line of her posture, the way she held her bloody hands, the deliberate calm in her breathing.

"An ordinary maid," Rocco said, his voice dangerously low, "does not carry out an emergency pediatric cricothyroidotomy with a dropped scalpel using textbook precision. An ordinary maid does not command me in my own house."

Arya kept her chin up. She knew her cover was blown. The moment she picked up that blade, Annie the mute maid ceased to exist.

"Your son was dying while twelve licensed professionals stood around like statues," Arya said evenly, her voice devoid of fear. "You can kill me now if you want. But if you do, who changes his bandages tomorrow?"

Rocco stepped closer, the scent of expensive cologne and gunpowder washing over her. He reached out, his massive calloused hand gripping her chin, forcing her face up toward the light of the crystal chandelier. He stared deep into her eyes, searching for deception.

"What is your real name?" he whispered.

"Dr. Arya Vance."

The name dropped into the room like a live grenade. Miller, the lead paramedic, gasped, stumbling backward against the wall.

"Vance?" Miller stammered, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief. "The pediatric cardiothoracic prodigy? The one who performed the Baltimore blackout transplant? You... you were struck off. You went to prison."

"I was framed," Arya said coldly, pulling her chin out of Rocco's grip. "And now, your son is stabilized, but he didn't aspirate poison by accident. Someone gave him a localized allergen or a heavy sedative."

Rocco’s head snapped toward Vanessa. The color instantly drained from the fiancée’s face.
