Chapter 4 - The Confession and the Betrayal

"Vanessa," Rocco said, his voice dangerously soft. "Did you touch the formula?"

"No! Never! Rocco, you can't believe her over your future wife!" Vanessa sobbed, backing toward the double doors of the nursery. "Bruno, tell him! Tell him she's lying!"

Bruno remained silent, his hand resting on his holster, his eyes darting between his boss and the weeping fiancée. He knew Rocco too well. When the Marchetti boss used that tone, someone was about to die.

"The security cameras don't lie," Rocco said, taking a slow step forward. "Bruno pulled the archives from the kitchen. You were seen entering the nursery at 3:00 AM yesterday, holding a private vial."

Vanessa’s expression instantly morphed from tearful innocence to a mask of venomous hatred. She stopped backing away, her shoulders dropping as a cold, cruel smile spread across her red lips.

"Fine! Yes, I did it!" Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing down the grand hallway. "Do you have any idea what it’s like living in this fortress with you, Rocco? You don't love me! You only cared about that brat! Once Leo was gone, you would have married me out of obligation, but your empire would have been split. I wanted him out of the way!"

Rocco didn't yell. He didn't rush forward. He simply drew his Beretta from his waistband, the metal catching the light.

"You touch my son, you forfeit your breath," Rocco said flatly.

Before Rocco could pull the trigger, Vanessa whipped a small silver derringer from her Chanel handbag and aimed it straight at Leo’s crib. "Drop the gun, Rocco! Or I put a bullet through the baby's head right now!"
