Chapter 12 - The Confession

That evening, a courier dropped off a thick, heavily sealed envelope addressed directly to me. The return address read County Detention Center, accompanied by Brenda’s shaky, jagged handwriting.

I sat at the mahogany kitchen island, staring at the envelope while Leo slept soundly in the bassinet beside me.

"You don't have to open it, Elena," Clara said gently, setting a cup of tea down next to my hand. "Anything she writes is designed to manipulate or inflict pain."

"No," I whispered, sliding a finger beneath the wax seal. "I need to know how deep this rabbit hole goes."

The letter was written on rough institutional paper:

May you like

Elena, If you are reading this, it means my son has completely abandoned me, and you have won your petty war. But you need to understand something before you pat yourself on the back. I didn't hate you because you weren't good enough for Marcus. I hated you because you were too strong. I knew the moment Marcus brought you home that you would see right through my control. I needed to break you before you broke us. The adoption secret? That was meant to go to my grave. But my own stupidity, wrapped in my desire to protect my son from a ghost, ruined everything. Enjoy your victory. But remember—blood ties are a curse in this family, and you haven't seen the end of it yet. — Brenda.

I dropped the paper onto the counter as if it were burning hot, a shiver running down my spine. The woman was locked behind bars, facing criminal charges for mail fraud, illegal data harvesting, and harassment, yet her malice still dripped from the ink.
