Chapter 3 - The Alliance

My Aunt Clara wasn't just any relative; she was the senior partner at one of the most ruthless corporate and family law firms in the state. When she retired from active courtroom litigation, she took on high-net-worth divorce and custody battles exclusively to keep her mind sharp. And right now, her mind was sharper than a scalpel.

Within twenty minutes, the low, rumbling purr of a luxury SUV engine echoed down our secluded gravel lane, its headlights sweeping across the dark silhouette of the shed.

I slid the heavy iron latch open just as Clara stepped out of the vehicle, dressed impeccably in a tailored wool coat despite the late hour, her silver hair pulled back into a severe, elegant chignon. Behind her stepped Arthur, her longtime paralegal and a licensed private investigator.

"Elena, sweet child," Clara murmured, her sharp eyes instantly sweeping over my bloodied nose, my torn pajamas, and the tiny bundle clutched against my chest. Her face hardened into a mask of pure glacial fury. "Who did this?"

"Marcus and his mother," I choked out, the adrenaline finally wearing off and leaving me shaking like a leaf in the wind. "They... they took Leo's DNA. They mailed a paternity kit behind my back. When I confronted them, Marcus dragged me across the floor by my hair."

Clara didn't scream or curse. Her expression simply grew dead and terrifying. She reached out, gently taking Leo from my arms and handing him to Arthur, who cradled the infant with surprising tenderness. Then, Clara gripped my shoulders, her gaze piercing right through me.

"Did you call the police?"

"No," I whispered. "I have something better. I have an audio recording. Twelve minutes of them admitting to the unauthorized swab, the harassment, and the physical assault."

Arthur let out a low whistle, pulling a small tablet from his briefcase. "Well, that simplifies things significantly. In this state, non-consensual biological sampling of a minor by a third party without a court order or medical necessity borders on illegal harvesting and harassment. Add domestic battery to the mix, and your husband is looking at felony charges."

"I don't want to just file charges," I said, wiping my face with a trembling hand. "I want to break them. Both of them. Brenda thinks she owns my child. She thinks she can tear my life apart because of her paranoid delusions. I want full custody, a restraining order, and I want Brenda legally barred from coming within five hundred miles of my son."

Clara offered a thin, predatory smile that bore a striking resemblance to a shark smelling blood in the water.

"Oh, darling," Clara said softly, pulling me into a fierce embrace before stepping back. "You called the right aunt. Arthur, get the recording synced to our secure server immediately. We’re going back to the house. And this time, they won't be able to lock us out."
