Chapter 5 - The Ultimatum

The silence inside the foyer was so absolute you could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen. Marcus looked like a man who had just been hit by a freight train. He looked at his mother, then at me, and finally down at his own trembling hands.

"Mom..." Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying realization. "What did you do?"

"Me?" Brenda shrieked, her voice cracking as panic finally broke through her haughty facade. "I was protecting you! She's the one who's guilty! Look at her! She's acting like a lunatic!"

"No, Brenda," Clara interrupted, stepping right up to her with an air of absolute authority. "You crossed a line that can never be uncrossed. Now, here are the terms of our departure."

Clara pulled a pre-drafted emergency separation and custody agreement out of her leather portfolio and tossed it onto the entryway console table.

"Elena is packing her things and taking Leo with her tonight," Clara stated coldly. "Marcus, you have exactly twenty-four hours to sign this agreement, granting Elena temporary primary custody, exclusive use of the marital residence, and agreeing to supervised visitation only. If you refuse, we bypass family court entirely and file criminal charges for domestic assault, kidnapping conspiracy, and illegal genetic harvesting against both you and your mother."

"You can't do that!" Brenda screamed, lunging forward as if she wanted to snatch the papers.

Arthur stepped into her path with the quiet, immovable presence of a brick wall, causing Brenda to stumble back.

"Try us," Arthur said flatly.

Marcus stared at the papers on the table like they were venomous snakes. Tears welled in his eyes, but for the first time, I didn't feel an ounce of pity for him. He had chosen his mother over his wife and newborn child. Now, he would reap the harvest of that choice.

"Elena... please," Marcus choked out, his voice breaking as he looked at me with pathetic desperation. "Don't do this to us. Give me another chance. I'll make Mom leave. I swear to God, she'll pack her bags tonight. Just don't take my son."

"Your son?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet. "You didn't think he was your son ten minutes ago, Marcus. You let your mother throw him across a bed. You watched her violate his body. You don't get to call him your son anymore."

I turned away, walking back down the hallway toward the nursery to pack Leo's things. Clara and Arthur stood guard at the door, ensuring neither Marcus nor Brenda could interfere.

As I folded tiny cotton onesies and stacked diapers into a canvas bag, my phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a notification from an unknown number—an automated text message.
