Chapter 8 - The Exile

The night air was freezing as Clara’s SUV pulled away from the curb, leaving the oppressive, glowing lights of the Vance household behind. I sat in the backseat, clutching Leo tightly against my chest, staring blindly out the window as the dark pines blurred into a smear of shadows.
"Are you okay, darling?" Clara asked softly, glancing back at me through the rearview mirror while Arthur drove in silence.
"I don't understand, Clara," I whispered, tears finally breaking free and tracking hot down my cheeks. "How is that possible? I didn't cheat. I swear to God, I never touched anyone else. If Leo isn't Marcus's... then whose is he?"
"We don't know that the test is even accurate, Elena," Clara said firmly, her voice a soothing anchor in the storm. "Brenda used a cheap mail-in commercial kit. Those things are notoriously prone to cross-contamination, mishandling, and clerical errors—especially when the sample was harvested illegally by an uncertified third party in a dirty bathroom."
"What if she switched the sample?" Arthur chimed in from the front seat, his eyes fixed on the dark road ahead. "Think about it. Brenda had motive, means, and opportunity. If she wanted to prove you were unfaithful to force a divorce, she could easily have swapped Leo's cheek swab with a random sample from a medical waste bin or even her own DNA to throw off the male markers."
A cold shiver ran down my spine. It sounded like something out of a psychological thriller, but knowing Brenda, it wasn't just possible—it was probable. That woman was entirely unhinged.
"We need a court-ordered, medically supervised re-test," Clara continued, her tone dropping into calculated strategist mode. "We file first thing in the morning. We petition for an emergency custody hearing based on the domestic assault, we present the audio recording of the illegal harvest, and we demand an independent, gold-standard paternity panel overseen by the court."
"And if the test comes back zero percent again?" I whispered, the terrifying thought making my breath catch in my throat.
Clara looked back at me, her gaze steady, warm, and fiercely protective.
"Then it doesn't matter whose DNA is in that baby, Elena. He is your son, you carried him, you love him, and I will tear down the entire judicial system before I let Marcus or that wretched mother of his take him away from you."
We drove in silence to Clara’s sprawling estate on the outskirts of the city. As Arthur carried my single canvas bag inside, Clara led me up to the guest suite—a warm, safe sanctuary filled with soft lighting, a plush bassinet, and absolute peace.
I laid Leo down in the bassinet, watching his tiny chest rise and fall in peaceful slumber, completely oblivious to the war raging around him. I sat on the edge of the mattress, my body aching, my mind spinning, and my phone clutched tightly in my hand.
I opened the digital copy of the lab report one last time, staring at the zero percent match.
Suddenly, my eyes caught a small detail at the very top of the PDF document—a detail I had been too panicked to notice before.
Sample Barcode: V-8842-M Processing Facility: Apex Genetic Laboratories, Chicago, IL Client Reference: Brenda Vance / Secondary Patient ID: Vance, Marcus.
Wait.
Secondary Patient ID: Vance, Marcus.
Why would Marcus's name be listed as a secondary patient ID on a newborn's paternity test unless...
My breath hitched.

Unless Brenda hadn't just tested Leo against Marcus.
Unless she had tested Leo against someone else.
