I arranged the meeting under the guise of an anonymous tip regarding corporate medical fraud—a subject I knew Julian Hayes specialized in exposing.
We met in a quiet, sunlit corner of a downtown artisan coffee shop. Julian sat at a corner table, tapping away on a laptop, looking up as I approached with the stroller.
"Ms. Vance?" Julian asked, standing up politely and offering a hand. "You said you had documents regarding Apex Genetic Laboratories?"
"I do," I said quietly, taking a seat across from him and placing Leo’s stroller beside my chair. "But before we talk about corporate fraud, Julian... we need to talk about family history."
Julian frowned, leaning back against the booth. "I'm an only child, Ms. Vance. I grew up in foster care before being adopted by a wonderful couple at age two. I don't have much of a family history to speak of."
I slid the unsealed adoption decree and the genetic comparison charts across the wooden table toward him.

Julian stared at the documents, his breath catching in his throat. His hands trembled slightly as he opened the folder, his eyes darting across the clinical proof of his own origin.
