Chapter 4 - The Return

The headlights of Clara’s SUV cut through the darkness of our driveway, casting long, menacing shadows across the front porch. The front door of the house was wide open, casting a bright, yellow rectangle of light onto the lawn.
As we walked up the steps, Marcus appeared in the doorway, looking frantic, disheveled, and pale. He had a phone pressed to his ear, and Brenda was hovering frantically right behind him, wringing her hands.
"Elena! Thank God, where were you—" Marcus started, stepping forward, but his words died in his throat when he saw Clara and Arthur flanking me.
"Back up, Marcus," Clara said, her voice cutting through the night air like a razor.
Marcus stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting from Clara to my bruised face. "Clara? What is—this is a family matter. Elena, why did you bring lawyers into this? You're blowing things completely out of proportion!"
"Out of proportion?" Brenda barked, stepping past her son with her chin thrust out defensively. "She's the one sneaking around like a thief in the night! She kidnapped my grandson and ran off into the dark! Marcus, call the police right now! Report her!"
Arthur stepped forward, clicking a button on his tablet, and suddenly, the crisp, unmistakable audio of Brenda's voice echoed across the quiet night air from the device's external speakers:
"I needed the truth. I needed to know if she was lying to my son..."
Brenda’s color drained instantly. Her mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water.
Marcus stared at the tablet in sheer horror as his own voice played next:
"She swabbed his cheek three mornings ago while you were showering... I found out after she'd already sent it."
"Where... where did you get that?" Marcus stammered, taking a panicked step backward. "You were in the bathroom! How did you—"
"It doesn't matter how I got it, Marcus," I said, stepping into the warm light of the doorway, standing tall despite my exhaustion. "What matters is that it's backed up on three separate secure cloud servers owned by a premier legal firm. Every word your mother said, every admission you made, is already in the hands of officers and family court magistrates."
"Elena, please," Marcus pleaded, his voice cracking as he reached out a trembling hand toward me. "Don't do this. We can talk about this inside. Just... let's drop the lawyers. We're a family."
"We stopped being a family the second your mother laid hands on my newborn son," I replied coldly. "And the second you decided my physical safety meant less than your mother's paranoid delusions."
Brenda suddenly found her voice again, stepping up with a venomous sneer. "You think a little recording is going to save you? That DNA kit is already at the testing facility in Chicago! Within forty-eight hours, the whole world is going to know you cheated on my son, and you won't get a dime, and you won't get custody of anything!"
Arthur chuckled quietly, adjusting his glasses. "Actually, Mrs. Vance, under state privacy and child protection statutes, any biological sample obtained without parental consent or a legal warrant is deemed inadmissible fruit of a poisonous tree. Furthermore, mailing a minor's genetic material across state lines without the signature of both legal guardians constitutes mail fraud and illegal data harvesting."

Brenda blinked, her arrogant smirk faltering. "What... what are you talking about?"
"It means," Clara said smoothly, stepping past Marcus and pushing her way directly into the foyer, "that not only will that DNA test be legally destroyed unread, but the lab that processed it is about to face a federal injunction. And you, Brenda, are about to be slapped with a multi-million-dollar civil lawsuit for intentional infliction of emotional distress and invasion of privacy."
