Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

Marcus stepped into the nursery, his towering frame suddenly feeling suffocatingly close. The pathetic, weeping husband from ten minutes ago was gone, replaced by a cold, vindictive stranger who looked at me as if I were a piece of garbage he wanted to scrape off his shoe.
"You lied to me," Marcus hissed, pointing a trembling finger at my face. "Nine months of gaslighting me. Making me fight with my mother. Making me look like a fool while you carried another man's baby!"
"Marcus, shut up and listen to me," Clara intervened, stepping smoothly between him and me with the quiet menace of an apex predator. "That test was conducted using an illicitly obtained sample, harvested without consent, and processed under questionable chain-of-custody protocols. It holds zero legal weight in a court of law."
"I don't give a damn about legal weight!" Marcus roared, his face turning a deep, furious crimson. "The science doesn't lie! She cheated! The little whore brought a bastard into my house and tried to pass it off as my blood!"
"Don't you dare call my son a bastard!" I screamed, a primal rage surging through my veins that completely eclipsed my fear. I shifted Leo securely in my left arm and stepped right up to Marcus, staring straight into his bloodshot eyes. "I have never touched another man in my life, Marcus! If that test says zero percent, something else is going on here!"
"Oh, really?" Brenda’s voice rang out shrilly as she appeared behind her son in the doorway, a triumphant, psychotic grin plastered across her face. "And what's your excuse, darling? Did the stork bring him? Did immaculate conception happen in our guest bedroom while Marcus was at work?"
"Shut your mouth, Brenda!" Clara snapped, turning her lethal glare onto the older woman. "You staged this entire thing from day one! You wanted him out of this marriage so you could control him forever!"
"Control him?" Brenda scoffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "I saved him! And the lab results proved me right! That baby doesn't belong to my son. Which means she has no right to a single penny of Marcus's money, and she certainly has no right to stay in this house."
Marcus looked down at me, his eyes hollow and dead. The love he had once claimed to feel for me had evaporated into thin air, replaced entirely by wounded male pride and his mother's poison.
"Get out," Marcus whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Pack your bags and get out of my house tonight. And leave the baby. He's not mine."
"I am not leaving my son anywhere near you two monsters," I spat back, my heart pounding so hard I thought it would burst.
"If you don't walk out that front door right now," Marcus snarled, taking a threatening step forward, "I will call the sheriff, have you arrested for trespassing, and file an emergency injunction to strip you of any custody rights whatsoever. And trust me, with a zero percent paternity match on record, a judge will sign off on it before morning."
Clara grabbed my arm, her grip firm and urgent.
"Elena, we're leaving," Clara murmured quietly into my ear. "Don't fight him here. We have the assault recording, we have the illegal harvesting proof, and we can order a court-mandated, legally binding DNA test through our own medical examiners. Let him think he's won. We'll destroy him in court."
I looked at Marcus one last time—at the man I had married, the man who had dragged me across the floor by my hair, the man who was now casting away his own child without a second thought based on a shady, stolen lab test.

"You're making the biggest mistake of your life, Marcus," I whispered.
"The only mistake I ever made was marrying you," he replied coldly.
