Chapter 15 - The Twist Beneath the Surface

While organizing the filing cabinet in my new home's small study, I came across the original manila folder Arthur had given me containing Brenda’s adoption decrees and medical archives.

I flipped through the brittle, yellowed pages, pausing at a document I hadn't examined closely during the chaos of the lawsuit: the original private adoption broker’s intake sheet from thirty years ago.

My eyes scanned the cramped, handwritten notes of the intake worker from the Chicago agency. Client: Brenda Vance. Adopted Infant: Male, born October 12. Biological Mother: Deceased. Biological Father: Unknown / Private Surrender.

Below that, a small, faded sticky note was attached to the back of the page, dated three days after Marcus's adoption: Note: Client requested complete genetic scrub. Child is a fraternal twin. Second infant placed with separate anonymous family in the tri-state area.

My breath caught in my throat.

Marcus had a twin?
