Chapter 21 - The Unseen Echo

The evening air carried the crisp, earthy scent of approaching autumn as Julian and I sat on the back patio, watching Leo chase fireflies across the manicured lawn. The past few years had woven a fabric of unshakeable peace into our daily lives, a stark contrast to the jagged chaos of our beginnings. Yet, history has a peculiar way of leaving invisible ink on the pages we think we’ve closed.
"Did you hear about the transfer?" Julian asked quietly, setting his coffee mug down on the patio table and breaking the gentle hum of the evening crickets.
I paused, looking over at him. "Transfer? Who?"
"Brenda," Julian replied, his expression unreadable beneath the porch light. "She’s being moved from the county facility to a minimum-security medical unit upstate. Her health has taken a sharp decline over the last six months."
A strange chill brushed against my skin—not fear, but the cold realization of time moving forward. "Does Marcus know?"

"Marcus tried to visit her once last year, but she refused to see him," Julian said, shaking his head. "He’s still living quietly out in the suburbs, trying to piece his life back together after years of intensive therapy. He never remarried. He spends most of his weekends volunteering at youth centers, trying to make amends for the sins of a past he couldn't control."
I looked back down at the lawn, where Leo was proudly holding a glowing jar, laughing as he showed it to an imaginary audience. I didn't feel hatred toward Brenda anymore. Hatred required an investment of energy I simply refused to spend on her. She was a relic of a storm that had long since passed.
