Chapter 10 - The Elephant’s Secret & The Unbreakable Vow

“Mia,” Adrian said gently, taking her tiny hand in his large one. “I have a confession to make to you.”
Mia blinked, suddenly curious. “A confession?”
Adrian reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, worn velvet box. But inside wasn't just a ring. Beside a brilliant, flawless diamond ring was a tiny silver charm shaped like an elephant—identical to the old, fading charm pinned to Gerald’s ear.
I gasped, clutching my throat. “Adrian... where did you get that?”
Adrian looked up at me, his eyes full of emotion. “Six years ago, before I ever met you, a charity foundation funded the emergency neonatal care unit at Bellevue Hospital. An anonymous donor paid for a premature baby’s life-saving surgery when her mother’s insurance failed.”
Tears instantly flooded my eyes. Six years ago, when Mia was born prematurely, an anonymous donor had paid her fifty-thousand-dollar medical bill. I had never known who it was. I had spent six years praying for the stranger who saved my baby’s life.
“It was you,” I breathed, tears streaming down my cheeks. “It was your foundation.”
“I didn't know it was your daughter until two days ago when I went through the old trust archives,” Adrian said, his voice thick with raw feeling. He turned back to Mia, holding out the tiny silver elephant charm. “Mia, six years ago, I helped make sure you got to grow up big and strong. And a few weeks ago, you walked into my hallway and saved me from being lonely.”
Mia looked at the silver charm, then looked at Gerald, and finally looked up at Adrian with a huge, beaming smile.
“I knew you were the right candidate,” Mia said solemnly, nodding her head as if approving an executive decision.
Adrian laughed—that deep, genuine, beautiful sound that had broken his icy barrier weeks ago. He turned to me, remaining on one knee, holding the diamond ring up in the soft light of the Manhattan skyline.
“Clara Vance,” Adrian said, his dark eyes shining with an absolute, unwavering love. “You brought warmth into a life that was completely frozen. You showed me that needing people isn't a danger—it’s the only thing that makes living worth it. Will you marry me? Will you let me spend the rest of my life being the partner you deserve, and the daddy Mia chose?”
I didn't hesitate. I dropped to my knees beside him, wrapping my arms around his neck and pressing my lips to his in a deep, passionate kiss as tears of pure happiness washed away every pain of the past.
“Yes,” I cried against his lips. “Yes, absolute yes.”

Mia threw her arms around both of us, squeezing Gerald between us in a messy, perfect group hug high above the city.
The cold billionaire of Manhattan was gone. In his place was the man who had answered the call of a six-year-old girl—and given us a home forever.
