Chapter 3 - The Shadow at the Gate

Adrian’s private penthouse in Tribeca was less of a home and more of a fortress. High above the noise of Manhattan, it was a masterpiece of minimalist steel, dark wood, and bulletproof glass.
Mia was fascinated. Within an hour, she had managed to convince Adrian’s stoic butler, Thomas, to serve her hot chocolate while she arranged her elephant, Gerald, on a multi-thousand-dollar Italian leather sofa.
I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the rain strike the glass, clutching a mug of tea that had long since gone cold. The tension of the last twelve hours had turned into a dull, thumping ache behind my eyes.
A quiet footstep sounded behind me. Adrian stepped into the warm glow of the city lights, holding two glasses of amber liquid. He handed me a glass of whiskey, his fingers brushing mine. The brief spark of heat sent a shiver down my spine.
“Drink,” he ordered gently. “You’re shaking.”
I took a small sip, feeling the liquid burn its way down my throat. “I can’t lose this job, Adrian. If I’m discredited, if I’m blacklisted... I can’t support Mia. I don’t have a safety net. I am her only safety net.”
“You are not going to be blacklisted,” Adrian said fiercely, turning to face me fully. “I will burn every competitor in this city to the ground before I let anyone touch your career.”
I looked up at him, searching his face. “Why did you pull away three days ago? After the night we talked about our pasts? You treated me like a stranger.”
Adrian sighed, a rare look of vulnerability crossing his sharp features. He ran a hand through his dark hair, unbuttoning his collar. “Because I realized how much power you were beginning to have over me, Clara. I’ve spent my entire adult life keeping people at a distance. Needing someone is a vulnerability. Caring about someone gives your enemies something to hit. And the moment I realized I was falling for you, I panicked. I thought if I distanced myself, I could protect you from the war that is always surrounding me.”
My heart stopped. The world narrowed down to the sound of his breath and the rain against the glass. I was falling for you. The words hung in the air, heavy and undeniable.
Before I could speak, his private phone vibrated on the coffee table. It didn't ring with a standard chime; it emitted a sharp, prioritized ping that signaled a security alert.
Adrian picked it up, his brow furrowing as he read the encrypted text. Suddenly, his expression hardened into granite.
“What is it?” I asked, my pulse quickening.
Adrian slowly looked up at me, his eyes dark with a mix of fury and hesitation. “The cyber-security team managed to crack the routing node used to frame your IP address. The hardware key wasn't bought on the dark web.”
“Where did it come from?”
“It was purchased by a subsidiary holding company owned by Vanguard Global,” Adrian said softly.
The name felt like a slap in the face. Vanguard Global was our fiercest rival—and the firm led by Julian Sterling.

Julian. Mia’s biological father. The man who had walked out on us five years ago without a backward glance, leaving me with a mountain of medical bills and a broken heart.
“Julian is back,” I whispered, the glass in my hand suddenly feeling impossibly heavy. “He didn't just leak the designs to destroy Blackwell & Reed. He did it to destroy me.”
