Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Blueprint

The emergency emergency board meeting was called within twenty minutes. Mia was placed under the watchful eye of my trusted assistant in the private lounge, provided with every snack and coloring book the building had to offer. But inside the main boardroom, the air was poisoned with venom.
Arthur Blackwell, the eighty-year-old founder’s son and chairman of the board, slammed his fist onto the mahogany table.
“This is an absolute disgrace!” Arthur roared, pointing a quivering, liver-spotted finger at me. “A compromised junior employee bringing her personal baggage into the executive suite! Our proprietary jewelry designs for Bellamy House were uploaded to an offshore server last night from an IP address traced directly to your home network, Ms. Vance!”
The room erupted. Whispers, cold glances, and open accusations rained down on me. I stood at the end of the long table, my hands clenched so tightly into fists that my nails cut into my palms.
“I didn't leak anything,” I declared, keeping my voice steady despite the terror clawing at my throat. “I have devoted ten years of my life to this firm. I would never compromise our work—or my own integrity.”
“Your home network doesn't lie!” another board member sneered. “And let’s not pretend we haven't all noticed the sudden... favoritism. The private breakfasts. The late-night meetings. The child running around the executive floor!”
“Enough.”
The word wasn't shouted. It was spoken quietly, with a razor-sharp control that cut through the chaos like a blade.
Adrian Kane rose from the head of the table. Standing at six-foot-three, broad-shouldered and radiating dangerous authority, he dominated the room effortlessly. The temperature in the space seemed to drop ten degrees.
“If anyone in this room accuses Ms. Vance of disloyalty again without hard evidence, I will personally see to it that your equity in this firm is liquidated and your seat revoked,” Adrian said, his tone deadly calm.
Arthur’s eyes widened in outrage. “Adrian! You are defending a woman whose personal life is a liability! Look at the press! They are calling this a scandal!”
“The press is reacting to a calculated, internal hit job,” Adrian replied, resting his hands flat on the glass table as he leaned forward, narrowing his dark eyes at Arthur. “The Bellamy House campaign was designed entirely by Ms. Vance. Her work brought this firm a thirty percent margin increase last quarter. The IP trace was spoofed. Anyone with a basic understanding of cyber warfare knows that. And if you think I am going to let a cowardly mole ruin my firm’s top talent to get to me, you have forgotten who owns the controlling shares of this company.”
I looked at Adrian, my breath catching in my throat. He wasn't just protecting the company. He was shielding me with his own body, placing his entire reputation on the line for mine.
“We have seventy-two hours before the press conference,” Adrian continued, turning to address the entire room. “If we do not present the full, uncorrupted physical prototypes of the Bellamy Collection by Friday evening, the stock will plunge. Until then, Ms. Vance reports directly to me. No one speaks to her. No one contacts her. If you have a problem with that, submit your resignation by noon.”
Silence descended on the room. No one dared to speak.
As the board members filed out, muttering under their breath, Adrian stayed behind. He walked over to where I was standing, the rigid barrier he maintained in public softening just a fraction.
“Are you alright?” he asked, his voice low and rich.
“You didn't have to do that,” I whispered, looking up into his dark eyes. “You put a target on your own back by taking my side.”
“I will always take your side, Clara,” he said, using my first name for the first time in front of the board glass. “Now get your coat and get Mia. We’re leaving.”

“Leaving? Where?”
Adrian pulled a pair of silver car keys from his pocket. “Whoever did this has access to your apartment's network. It isn't safe for you or Mia there tonight. You’re coming with me.”
